Crossing shanty...a sorta "semi-scale" project...

Post by Howard »

Been wanting to make a shanty that was less "tin plate toy-like" but not quite "rivet-counter perfect"...

Here are most of the raw pieces made from my favorite building materials...cardboard, card stock, cereal box material, manila folder, matchsticks, etc...the crossing guard figurine is from a dollar store construction set...he'll get a paint job as well...

More later...including a railroad crossing sign...

A throwback project similar to those of semi-scale model-railroaders during the 1930s. Great project, Howard...looking forward to seeing the paint-scheme and the completed shanty.

the shanty is finished...i choose country tan for the body, heritage brick for the roof and a medium green for the door and window mulls...the glazing is that clear material from window front business envelopes...i have some pieces that are really old and eventually they take on semi-transparent look...door knob is a miniature straight pin...didn't paint the coal bin hinges but might...the joint lines on the base were drawn with a sharp pencil...

still painting on the crossing guard figurine and about to start the crossing sign...

Looks terrific, Howard...surely a fine addition to the layout.

One question - what material was used for the "corrugated" roofing? A bit of scored cardboard?

Paul ll...

the "corrugated roofing" is actually "single face corrugated cardboard"...the flutes are just about 1/8" or so apart...it's sold on line as a scrap booking hobby material...it's also found on those wraparound graphic signs you see on beer and soft drink displays...i always scuff the printed side with medium grit sandpaper to break the printed surface so the glue will get to the fibers...it's then laminated to cereal box cardboard with white glue...it works for me...

here's a link to the stuff at michaels...

my very best regards...

finished painting the crossing guard...used ordinary craft store acrylics over a flat gray spray primer with a final coat of mat finish acrylic spray...i am definitely going to change out the STOP sign for a red flag...

want to start on the crossing sign next week...
