Big Indoor Trains

I have a few prewar Flyer pieces that I've picked up over the years. I don't know much about prewar Flyer, other than the 3/16th scale stuff. Post some pics here and educate me.

Here's a 3315 steamer with its 3199 tender:



This is a very nice locomotive which includes a bell (that thankfully can be turned off). Great runner with a diecast boiler, from the early 1930's.

American Flyer 1201 motor with a drag of four-wheel freights:



This 1201 burns through headlamps at a steady clip...need to look into that.

Picked up this 3046 Flyer flat at York this week:



I bought a replcement brake-wheel from Prewar Train Parts' booth. I'm pretty much convinced there isn't anything you can not find at York if you look hard enough.

Was there a specific load on this one? Looks like the tie-downs were maybe for a specific thing? Never saw anything close to this one before. Thanks for posting.

Unlike Lionel, I believe American Flyer provided a load of individual pieces of "lumber" that were fastened by a pair of wire bars at the top. Lionel lumber loads were a single block of wood with grooves cut to imitate a pile.

Moments after buying this one I found a better example with an intact brakewheel, load, the metal fasteners and nicer paint a few tables away...c'est le vie...

Here's the caboose I got at York a couple of years ago. The roof was in rough shape, but the body was nice. Against my better judgement I stripped the roof and went ahead and repainted it:







Looks like a decent match...

Nice rehab on the caboose. LOVE the orange box car. Something about the brazenly bizarre proportions, I suppose.

A friend of mine, an O "scale" model railroader, once said the difference between his layout and my layout is that he's building trains trying to model history, while my toys are history. That's pretty profound...I never think of this stuff as anything but toys.
