50 years ago, Dad gave me a "modern diesel" Lionel locomotive, caboose, open-top cargo car and box car. I still have enough track (not so shiny) to go around the tree, and original power supply. I got it out this Christmas for my grandson (4) and it wasn't very fast any more (but he loved it any way). When he put a few small toys in the open cargo car, it came to a complete stop. Should I start over? I had the locomotive serviced before I boxed it up 15 years ago and hadn't brought it out until last Christmas.

So sorry I took so long to get back to you - I've been on the road for weeks. I'm sure that Sacramento has an "official" Lionel repair station, probably at a hobby shop somewhere. Chances are pretty good that it just needs a little TLC, such as lubrication. The oil they use dries out over a period of time.
Also check the rails and the metal wheels on the locomotive for rust and grime.
Hope this helps, Please let me know how else I can help.
