Here's a recently acquired postwar Hornby clockwork set:

The 2270 locomotive was manufactured during both the pre- and postwar periods. As I understand it, they are very similar in construction, one difference being the prewar version having red spoked wheels. This one is likely from the early to mid-1950s.

Yup, after all of these years, the mechanisms can be pretty fragile. One has to be especially careful not to overwind. Fortunately, all three examples I have are still in running order, although the Marklin is a bit dodgy. There was a time when finding a key to fit was a problem, but those are plentiful now.
