European toy trains are intriguing, especially those manufactured during the interwar period. The fact that the companies were able to re-emerge following the First World War, then struggle through the period of austerity, German hyperinflation, and then the Great Depression, is quite a story. There's an innocence seen here that belies all the ugliness of the period and following disaster. Many of the great toy companies of Europe would perish as a result. Seen in that light, it makes these artifacts even more amazing. |
