I want to start for my enormous halloween village. I'm done with the houses and need to add the train. Your website is phenomenal. :)

Paul's Reply:
Hawthorne Village used to make several nice ones, but they're, sadly, all gone. You could go to eBay model trains and put Hawthorne and Halloween into the search line. Most days you'll get little or nothing, but if you make that a "favorite," you can check it every day with one click and see if anything's coming online.

If you come up with even a few cars, you should know that On30 trains run on HO track with HO-style power supplies, so you could always flesh your train out with HO stuff you pick up at flea markets or whatever.

For new Halloween trains, you'll probably be looking at Lionel. Lionel will announce its 2014 line in March, and stores will be putting in orders, but stuff might not be available for a couple more months. In the meantime, several of the pieces I listed last fall are still available. I haven't gone back and checked all the links recently, so some of them may be gone.

Different versions will emerge this spring. For example they had one car that was a giant pumpkin head one year and a giant ghost head the next year, etc.

Also, if you check out the primer pages of our halloweentrains.com site, you'll seem some great buildings you can add for VERY little money.

Have a great week,

Have you seen Bradford Exchange's Journey Of Doom Express Train set? They say it runs on HO track. Would it be stylistically complimentary to a Halloween themed Hawthorne Village?

------our reply------please log in and add yours ----------

Style would be a good match, yes. It might seem a little small, though, since it's an HO train and most Hawthorne Village buildings are closer to S or O. But it's probably going to look better with the Hawthorne Village sets than anything else on the market this year.

Best of luck.

This is my followup to the message immediately above:

Ooops, I just realized how fast halloween is coming up. Bradford Exchange sells their trains one piece at a time like they do their town. If you order one of their trains now, you'll only have the locomotive by Halloween.

If you call them you just MIGHT be able to get the first three "Issues" at once, which will give you the locomotive, a car, and a circle of track and power supply, enough to run the train. If you can't and you still want to run a train with your Halloween village, I might consider Lionel's Halloween offerings. Yes, they're a little larger and run on 3-rail track . . . . .

Best of luck. I'd love to see photos of your village set up.

I really want the Transylvania Train

-----Our Reply------Feel Free to Log in and post your own -----------

I have tried tracking down the Lionel Transylvania Express 30056 train set in online stores I trust and not had much luck. Some hobby shops may still have them on their shelves, but I have no way of getting to those. I am sorry that I haven't been able to help you.

If you check eBay periodically and search for "lionel 30056," you may come up with one eventually. They don't list one now, though; I checked.

Lionel announces their train sets for the following Halloween and Christmas season at a big train show in the spring, and starts taking orders. Then they tell the factories in China how many of which trains they need, and the factories start shipping. But most Halloween trains for 2015 won't start arriving in in this country until at least August, and some of them won't start arriving until early October. (Many of the "Christmas-themed" trains for 2014 didn't get here until January, 2015, if that tells you anything about how close they cut it.)

So all I can really tell you is to keep your eyes open. I generally start trying to update my Halloween and Christmas train pages in June, but so far I don't know what new trains will be available.

Best of luck, please let me know how things work out.

Paul
